Jewelry by Michelle McCormick

What importance do the materials that you use have to your art? For me, the found materials are everything. Newness, in objects is boring to me and for the most part, I much prefer a wabi sabi worn beauty. It’s a design challenge to repurpose as much as possible, which is also my way of being sustainable as a designer and artist.  I have always been a collector of oddments. They sort of find me and I hang out with them for a while and eventually they work into a lovely assemblage combination.

Do you have a pet? Yes, I have a large Pomeranian Dog and a large fluffy Cat. They are both the same red-blond color. Which is convenient because their fur also matches my wood floor, thus reducing my cleaning time. Do Boys count? I have two of those who do not match my floors.

What is the first thing you ever made? I made a necklace using a piece of broken white brain coral in a gold wire wrap. I thought it might be kind of weird but I wore it anyway and got rave reviews. That encouraged me to follow my own vision and I was off and running.
