Twisted Steel Necklaces Twisted Steel Necklaces

What appeals to you most about making what you make? Why do you make things? I straight up love bending metal and I have a really hard time standing still. If my hands have something to do I’m good to go. When I start to work a piece of metal I feel like I have to listen to where it wants to move and go with the flow even in the midst of my own agenda. I really like to make pieces that have organic, flowing curves and that’s just not something I can force.

What importance do the materials that you use have to your art? Right now, it’s pretty imperative that I work with steel. It’s just got the energy that exemplifies the concept of dirtypretty. It’s this gritty, urban medium that I get super dirty working with (because of the carbon coating) that allows me to make these whimsical, swirling shapes, and it’s so strong I can make something really delicate and feminine out of it. I love working with something that is typically an industrial medium and creating something highly personal with it.

What steps do you take before actually making a piece? I make a LOT of demo pieces. This gives me the chance to practice new forging or weaving techniques and I can work out new designs with the practice components. I can sketch ideas all I want, but I’m a super kinesthetic person, so I have to make lots of bits and pieces to figure out what I want to do and how to do it. It also helps to wear these prototypes so I can get a sense for how they look and feel before I create the final design.

If a genie popped out of a bottle and offered to grant you 3 wishes, what would they be? 1. I wish my life had it’s own soundtrack that some genius sound designer was instigating from behind the scenes.
2. I wish my body could transform so I could fly like a bird or swim like a fish.
3. I wish I felt like I had more than enough time to do everything I want to do.
