Why did you choose the medium you work with? Did I choose collage or did it choose me? When I was dating my wife Sarah she pulled a bunch of art materials out one day and started making collages. I asked if I could join her and I’ve been doing it ever since. The materials have changed a bit since those first days but I have narrowed down the types of imagery I like to play with. I really love using vintage images because they are beloved and speak to the nostalgia we have for the past. I also like taking iconic characters like Jesus and putting them in situations that are seemingly abnormal for them. I like to shake things up a bit.

What appeals to you most about making what you make? Why do you make things? I’ll answer the second question first. I make things because I have to. I’ve always had to express myself in one way or another. If I wasn’t making art, I’d have to write a song or a story. It just comes out of me and has to go somewhere. What appeals to me most about my collages is the creation of something that tells a story and says something about the world we live in but in a humorous way. The sermons I am preaching are better received through my art due to the medium and the humor.

What are your other interests? I love music and have been in several bands over the years. I’m usually the lead singer and might play a bit of hand percussion. I would love to pick up some hand percussion lessons in the near future just for fun. I miss making music. I also do a bit of photography. I put most of my other interests (acting, writing, music) aside a few years ago to pursue visual art totally and completely. I miss them sometimes but I felt like I had to focus on one thing to be good at that one thing. I chose visual art and that choice has paid off.
