Hi there Twilight artists and lovers, my name is Ryan and I am proud to introduce myself as the new Winter Intern here at Twilight Artist Collective. I contacted the gallery a couple of months ago through my interest in Exhibition Design wanting to know more about this gallery that had somehow escaped my radar, and asked if they might possibly be able to help me gain some of the experience I might need for this far-out career choice. My interests in the art world lie in how an artist’s work is displayed and how that relates to their representation on commercial and noncommercial levels.

Going in for my first visit to Twilight was memorable and a little serendipitous. The art and merchandise seemed to pop right into place, and the girls were happy to talk to me about my interests and were more than happy let me help them out at the shop. If one of my art history professors saw the neat arrangement of prints and cards in up-cycled vintage trunks with a wall of salon-style canvases and panels, they might say something like “a perfect union of figure and ground,” without the least bit of irony. What I love most about the shop though is the dedicated back room gallery with monthly show-changes highlighting the work of some of the best up-and-coming local artists. My other favorite thing about Twilight is the fact that anything in the shop can be purchased and brought back to your home. And just in time for the holidays! But why should do your holiday shopping at Twilight? Because art is the gift that keeps on giving: it’s fresh, local, one of a kind and handmade!

Come on down to Twilight y’all and check out the art! I’ll be heading up the shop on Monday’s through the rest of the year waiting for you to come by and find your new favorite decor piece.

New Paintings by Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage

ABOUT THE SHOW:

We’ve shared a home and a studio for nearly ten years. It was a challenge to fit the puzzle pieces together at first, with wildly diverse personal histories, but over time we’ve turned the “otherness” that comes from different thought processes and life experiences into a strength. We often find that what one person can’t do, the other can, and we’ve learned how to meet in the middle.

Today, we spend a good part of our days and nights about 10 feet apart in our studio. We take significantly different approaches to painting—from the content we choose to the brushes we use, and the colors on our palettes—but like the rest of our life, the results end up being surprisingly complimentary. See what we mean with the work in “Mine and Yours.”

-Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage

SHOW OPENS: Thursday, October 11th during West Seattle Art Walk from 6-9pm

SHOW CLOSES: Friday, November 2nd

Marty Gordon, Tim Manthey and Craig van den Bosch began their friendship and artistic collaboration in the summer of 2011. Their passion for the medium of collage brought them together for Contemplations on the Dialectical Utopian Vision, a collage exhibition at Fremont Abbey curated by van den Bosch. Manthey and Gordon created their first collaborative art works for that show. After the show, they began to meet together for conversation and, on occasion, creating and trading art with one another.

In August of 2011, the three artists began work on three collaborative collage journals in the Exquisite Corpse style. Each artist started a journal and then passed it to the next artist. The artists agreed that no image would be sacred and gave each other the freedom to do anything they like, even if that meant covering over or destroying one another’s work. The journals were finished in February of 2012.

The next phase of the project began soon after when the artists secured a September 2012 show at Twilight Artist Collective. Dubbed the Collagemonauts by an artist friend, the three began work on larger works of art for the show.

Themes and motifs emerged naturally as the Collagemonauts continued their collaborations. Space, religion, indigenous people, and medical science became important themes to explore. The title, Cryogenic Nude America comes from combining the incidental titles of the three collaborative journals, and speaks to some of the abstractions presented in their artwork.

Talking At The Same Time is a show about the art of the crowd. In today’s society we tend to have a mob mind set through the advent of social media. Sometimes it is difficult to find yourself in this web of ones and zeroes. The connectivity of the world we live in can make originality an even harder commodity to come by. So I decided not to make anything stand out. In crowds it is easy to get lost. Come get lost at Twlight Artist Collective on August 9th. Everyone will be Talking At The Same Time.
